Album review: Zeal, by Kings Kaleidoscope

Christian music is not known for its best quality, originality or experimentation -- in fact, Christian Contemporary Music is well-known for the very same lack. Yet, as a Christian musician, I love to discover new music and artists brave enough to sing or play for Christ without the fear of "overplaying." In this sort of music, I have found my favourite two albums, one of which I will briefly review on this occasion: Zeal, by Kings Kaleidoscope.
Zeal is a concept album that explores common topics most Christians can relate to, such as apathy and brotherhood in Jesus' love. Kings Kaleidoscope goes through them while experimenting with catchy rhythmic patterns, sounds of different origins and bold poetry. By listening to it quite a few times, you might even be able to identify the level of attention to small details displayed in, for example, how "A Little Bit of Faith," the last track, mirrors the second one, "Hero Over My Head."
The thought behind Zeal makes it so good an album, and, even if it is not trying to be an epic masterpiece of Christian music, it still takes us on a journey alongside the sort of  'main character,' named Zeal, as he goes from complete apathy (a 'coma') to a little bit of faith that is enough for him to admit he "forgot the joy of suffering" and claim that he would now lose it all to find God. And we Christians should all aim to go through this on a more personal level.
All in all, the heart, dedication and creativity Kings Kaleidoscope put into Zeal is evident, and we should strive to learn from it both on the technical and the spiritual level.
